Hōkūleʻa: 50 Years 

Hōkūleʻa, Hawaiʻi’s legendary voyaging canoe, first launched on March 8, 1975. In celebration of a half-century of influencing cultural revival, environmental advocacy, and a renewed connection to the earth and ocean, March 2025 kicks off a variety of opportunities to reflect on Hōkūleʻa’s beginnings and her profound, worldwide impact

  • Call for stories: Share your personal remembrances, stories, photos, or videos that honor the history and impact of the legendary canoe.  
  • Student projects: Have your students worked on projects related to Hōkūleʻa? PVS would love to hear about it! Please send an email (pictures encouraged) to genealogy@pvshawaii.org. Be sure to include details like your inoa (name), school (kula), and papa (grade level). 
  • Video stories on Instagram: 
    • Herb Kawainui Kāne: A visionary and founding member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Herb believed in the power of the canoe to reconnect Hawaiians to their cultural roots. 
    • Hawaiian language thrives: Learn Hawaiian voyaging phrases that can be used during Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and throughout the year. 
    • Arrival at Hōnaunau Bay: A powerful memory of Hōkūleʻa’s first arrival at Hōnaunau Bay. 
    • Hōkūleʻa’s legacy: A testimony to the relevance and power of Hōkūleʻa’s continued impact. 
  • Nā ʻAumākua o Ka Waʻa project: As part of an ongoing project that will continue through the Moananuiākea Voyage, PVS is capturing the contributions of almost 150 people—some of whom are recognized by name on Hōkūleʻa—to ensure their stories are forever part of her legacy.
