Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia sailed to Marae Taputapuātea on the island of Raʻiātea on May 17, 2022. In doing so, they asked permission to enter the sacred pass of Teavamoʻa, honoring this sacred site as a home of navigators as well as Hawaiians’ origins from Kahiki. With this, the Moananuiākea voyage makes the promise of carrying the heritage of Taputapuātea around the Pacific.
